More Than Just a Cut: Why I Invest in Curly Hair Education

There comes a point in every stylist's journey when you realize it’s time to go deeper—not just to learn new techniques, but to reconnect with the why. That’s exactly why I signed up for The Mona Academy.
As a stylist who specializes in curls, I believe in staying sharp, informed, and intentional. This wasn’t just another class—it was a reset, a challenge, and a reminder that investing in education is one of the biggest ways I can invest in you.
What Is The Mona Cut?
If you're a stylist reading this, let me break it down for you.
The Mona Cut includes five distinct cutting icons, and the one I completed is called Da Logo. It’s the foundation—the very first shape you learn before diving into the others. Inspired by The Mona Cut logo itself, this shape focuses on building volume at the top using angled techniques, creating a soft heart shape or a more structured diamond silhouette.
But listen! This wasn’t just a “how-to” class—it was a masterclass in going back to the fundamentals and reimagining them through a curly lens. From the way we approach curl-specific consultations to the precision of each cut, this class pushed me to refine my technique and see each curl as a new opportunity for balance and beauty.
She broke down the why behind every movement: how to adjust the shape to different curl patterns and head shapes for my clients. The science of curl behavior, and the art of conducting a truly curl-specific consultation. We learned how to properly prep the hair so the shape holds, moves, and makes sense—not just in the chair, but as it grows out. Every detail she taught wasn’t just technical—it spoke to your creative intuition. It challenged you to be more intentional, more precise, and more in tune with each curl on the head.
Why I Took It
Mona was one of the first curly stylists I ever followed—long before she started teaching. Her work was clean, intentional, and stunning. You could tell she had Vidal Sassoon training, and when I found out she studied with Tracy Sakosits (whom I personally trained with for a one-on-one ABC class), it all clicked.
I remember first seeing the after of her cuts and thinking, "That’s the kind of result I want for my clients." Not just styled to look cute—but cut to perfection. The haircut itself was the style. It didn’t need to be overworked. It was polished, but honest. That’s what drew me in.
What I Learned
This class felt like the Vidal ABCs of cutting but for curly hair. Mona helped me see the areas where I could refine my process, but also reminded me: I already know what I’m doing. I just needed some adjustments.
Here are a few gems that stuck with me:
The haircut is the style—it shouldn't rely on excessive styling to look good
It’s okay if the end result isn’t "perfectly polished"—curls have personality
Ask detailed, intentional questions during consultations
Focus on the finishing touches that elevate a cut
It reminded me that I truly love this work. And it made me proud of how far I’ve come.
Why It Should Matter To You
If you're a client reading this, know that when a stylist invests in education, it’s because we care about giving you the best experience possible.
I don’t just want to cut your hair and send you out the door. I want you to walk out feeling refreshed, confident, and in love with your curls. We want you to feel like you’re in good hands the moment you sit down... And to know that the same care continues when you're styling your hair at home.
I don’t take it lightly that you trust me with your hair. I want to earn that trust every time you sit in my chair.
Next Blog: Curly Cuts vs. Regular Cuts
This class reminded me: cutting curly hair is not the same as cutting straight hair. In next month’s blog, I’ll break down exactly why curly cuts are different, and why that difference matters.
Until then, Thank You for letting me keep learning and loving curls with you.
✨ With love from Pearland, Texas and Cali ✨
